Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother and godparents. Her father left her family. While a small child, Ford battled anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused through word-related associations. Ford was interested in acting during her teens, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford applied instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured a position on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime, she had already made her TV debut on a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate was a part of such television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Alongside her usual stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
